Often websites are discontinued, abandoned, or are not maintained.
I try to keep up with changes and convey accurate information, but
mistakes happen.
Unfortunately, some websites just advertise to collect money but
actually do little, if anything, to help the homeless. When I discover
those, they are deleted. Postings here do not imply an endorsement
of any organization or church.
If you know of more websites that should be listed, or if corrections
should be made, please e-mail me at:

Finding Help on the Internet
Search engines can be of great help in finding assistance, and
learning how to make the best use of them can be worthwhile.
There is more to it than just putting words into a search field and
pressing <return>. The proper choice of words, and also using special
characters to limit the results, makes a big difference. If the search is
too general you'll end up with tens of thousands of responses. If the
search is too limited, you may be missing the results that you really
want.
For example, if you enter the words florida shelter in a search field you
will get pages that just happen to have the word florida AND the word
shelter somewhere in the page. If you use the words together in
quotes, like "florida shelter", you will get pages that have both words
together in a line. Still too many results? Adding another word to the
search like Tampa will help to limit the results to pages that also
include Tampa. Getting a lot of results listing shelters for dogs? Adding
-dogs (with the - sign) will eliminate pages that have the word dogs. Not
finding what you really want? Try different combinations of words.
Some search engines will suggest alternative words for you.
Some good search engines are:
ask.com is relatively simple to use
bing.com has a new method of presenting results.
dogpile.com is a multi-engine (meta) search.
google.com is by far the most widely used search engin.e
kartoo.com topic search with interesting graphics.
yahoo.com is also very popular.
Keep in mind that search engines are usually only updated about once
a month, so you may not find the most recent information.
Also try local newspaper and TV/radio websites. News search sites
such as topix.net can be very helpful, and are updated continually.
Your local library may have paid access to other media search sites.
Many groups providing assistance or active in homeless issues don't
have websites, or don't update them, but yet may appear in the news
ocassionally. Searching local news archives, including newspapers and
radio/TV stations, can help.
Websites are not just useful for those seeking help. They are also
important to organizations which need to be noticed. Many
organizations keep hoping for donations and volunteers while the
general public often doesn't even know they exist or what they do. If
they want to have an active role in the community they need to make
people aware of what they are accomplishing and what they need to
continue operation. Developing a website, and properly maintaining
and advertising it, can be very significant to an organization which
hopes to grow and be significant in the community.
Community Voice Mail provides
free voice mail for those who
cannot afford a phone, making it
possible to give a personal phone
number on job applications etc.
and recieve messages at any
phone (free on most pay phones).
cvm.org
Dial 211 for free on any phone, in
areas of the country where available,
for assistance information. 211.org
refdesk.com is a website composed
mostly of links to sources of news and
information. I use it often.
While not technically a non-profit website,
craigslist.org allows searching classified
listings, and also posting ads, for free. It's
a great resource for finding jobs, posting
resumes, and finding lower cost rentals.
